It's our birthday!

A year has passed since the re-launch of the UsersTCP, and what a year it has been.

We have introduced a new Annex and welcomed new members and delegates. Our Annexes have continued to produce outstanding work and outputs, and our 2021 work plan is already developing into another busy year.

Read our Annex Snapshots below to find out what has been happening and join us on 18 November for our latest webinar on peer-to-peer energy trading.

Social License to Automate
expands research team

2020 has seen the research team in the Social License to Automate task grow from strength to strength. Julien and Rishabh (pictured) are two of the researchers who have recently joined us. Read more about the researchers on the Annex website here.
RECENT HIGHLIGHTS from SLA include the Annex report from the Social Studies of Science Society conference and the presentation given by Declan Kuch (Task Leader) – starts at the 1:02:00 mark.

New Gender and Energy Annex
getting ready to launch in 2021

Our new research collaboration - Empowering all: Gender in policy and implementation for achieving transitions to sustainable energy will gather researchers from the fields of gender and energy in a global network to analyse energy policy and technologies from gender perspectives and provide recommendations for policy design and implementation.

The aim of this international collaboration is to apply gender perspectives to support the participating countries in their work to design a more efficient and inclusive energy system, and through this also support ongoing efforts to foster energy transitions. This is particularly pressing now, as countries develop measures to mitigate the social and economic costs of the current COVID-19 crisis. More information about the aims and background to this Annex can be found on our website here.

Launching in early 2021, the work is led by Sweden, with Anna Åberg and her colleagues at Chalmers University, Sweden as Annex Leaders. The Netherlands will play a central role in the Annex too, leading one of the strands of work. Austria is in the final stages of awarding a research group funding for participating in the Annex. Ireland and the UK are also currently preparing tenders for participation. We are also in discussion with researchers from other TCP members in Australia, the United States, and India.

We aim to make the international collaboration as broad as possible, so please get in touch if you are interested!

Hard-To-Reach Energy
Users Annex achieves milestones

The HTR (Hard-to-Reach Energy Users) Annex recently completed its first year of a 3-year research collaboration between the US, Sweden and New Zealand (with Canada and the UK providing significant research support). You can watch our webinar on how to reach hard-to-reach energy users here.

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: We have developed a HTR Characterisation based on a survey of HTR experts from over 20 countries, interviews with over 50 HTR experts from our participating countries and an in-depth Literature Review (to be published as an E-Book)Findings from this effort were also published in the ACEEE Summer Study Proceedings, and will be presented at our own international panel on HTR at the Behaviour, Energy and Climate Change (BECC) conference later in the year.

VIEW FINDINGS
A first field research pilot based on our research process (the Behaviour, Energy and Sustainability Training (BEST) Course) was also published in the ACEEE proceedings. Parts of this work are currently being incorporated into commercial energy manager training courses in both, the U.S. and Canada. Year 2 of our Annex will focus on a global Case Study Analysis of HTR case studies targeting (low) income households and small businesses. We invite HTR experts and programme administrators to forward us potential case studies to drsearotmann@gmail.com.

Second half of 2020
a busy time for GO-P2P

RECENT HIGHLIGHTS: September 2020 saw the IEEE, Swiss Federal Office of Energy and IRENA support the GO-P2P event on grid integration of peer-to-peer energy models. This included the third meeting of the Global Observatory on Peer-to-Peer, Community Self-Consumption and Transactive Energy Models (GO-P2P).
VIEW TOPICS COVERED
In October 2020, the International Association for Trusted Blockchain Applications (INATBA) and the Global Observatory on Peer-to-Peer, Community Self-Consumption and Transactive Energy Models (GO-P2P), announced they are launching a joint Task Force focusing on the use of distributed ledger technologies (DLTs) in energy trading business models.
VIEW PRESS RELEASE
All members of INATBA and GO-P2P are welcome to join the Task Force by emailing energy-wg-cochair@inatba.org or by contacting the GO-P2P Annex Leader Alexandra Schneiders at a.schneiders@ucl.ac.uk.
Energy Sector Behavioural Insights Platform develops Environment Scan report
During its first year of activity, the Behavioural Insights Platform of the UsersTCP has developed an environment scan report assessing how behavioural insights have been applied to demand-side energy policy and programmes.

The project looks at behavioural factors acting as barriers to energy saving behaviours, to the uptake of energy efficient, clean energy technologies and of sustainable mobility options. Discussing over 40 case studies, it provides a snapshot of how energy ministries, regulatory agencies and utilities can leverage behavioural insights to design and implement more effective energy policies and programmes.

Main insights were discussed in a webinar organised by the UsersTCP Academy.

The report is forthcoming in November. Follow UsersTCP on Twitter here to keep posted about its publications.

Business Models and Systems Annex
further develops Fit To Serve platform

The Business Models and Systems Annex has finalised the analysis of multiple case studies in new energy services in Ireland, The Netherlands, Australia and Sweden. These cases generated interesting findings on new entrepreneurial strategies to change the institutional context to become more conducive to their disruptive services. These findings will soon be published in several reports and webinars. In addition, the ‘fit to serve’ tool that was developed earlier is being updated, based on recent research and findings, turning it into a Fit to Serve platform, where all the findings, webinars, reports etc will be posted.
Dr. Ruth Mourik, the Annex Operating Agent, will also be presenting a webinar on the Annexes work on January 14, 2021.  Further details will be available on our website in late December.
Academy
In November, the Academy we will present the 12th webinar since the re-launch.  These webinars have been delivered in conjunction with our sponsor, the European Copper Institute (part of the Copper Alliance), and topics and presenters continue to be excellent and well received.

WEBINAR #12 sees our GO-P2P Annex Leader, Alexandra Schneiders, present an introduction to the Global Observatory on Peer-to-Peer, Community Self-Consumption and Transactive Energy Models (GO-P2P).  The webinar takes place on 18 November 2020 at 3pm CET.
