Register for an Online Event: Overcoming Challenges in Behavioural Demand Flexibility

Join us for an online roundtable discussion exploring the challenges and opportunities in behavioural demand flexibility. The event will take place on Zoom on 20th November 2024, at 3:00 PM GMT. You can register here.

As the energy landscape evolves, encouraging shifts in consumer behaviour is critical for optimising energy use and therefore achieving our sustainability goals. This event aims to tackle some of the most pressing questions surrounding behaviour change, policy interventions, and public support for flexible energy demand.

The discussion will bring together policymakers, NGO representatives, and academics to exchange ideas and explore practical solutions to the following difficult challenges:

  • Regulatory Influence: How can, and how much should, governments drive behaviour change through policies, such as banning low-efficiency appliances or mandating specific technologies?
  • Reaching the Wider Audience: What strategies can be employed to build support for demand flexibility among consumers who are not early adopters, as well as those from disadvantaged backgrounds?
  • Beyond Financial Incentives: What interventions trigger consumers to adopt flexibility behaviours and technologies, aside from traditional incentives?
  • Demonstrating Value: How can the benefits of aggregated actions be effectively communicated to consumers, such as participating in community projects or supporting local energy infrastructure?

Our panel features six distinguished experts from government, academia and the non-profit sector, who will share their insights and experiences in addressing these challenges:

Robert Metcalfe: Chief Economist at Octopus Energy, SIPA Professor of Energy Policy at Columbia University
Anca Mihalache: Lead on Smart Energy at the Department for Energy Security and Net Zero (DESNZ)
Karina Knaus: Head of Economy, Consumers & Prices at the Austrian Energy Agency
Nicole de Koning: Programme leader Behavioural and societal transition at TNO
Freddie Herbert: Principal Behavioural Scientist at Ofgem
Abigail Ward: Policy Manager at Energy Saving Trust UK

This 90-minute roundtable will provide an opportunity for participants to engage with the panel through Q&A and contribute to a discussion that seeks to shape the future of behavioural demand flexibility.
